BUZZWORTHY BUILDERS AT NAHBS 2015

This week’s VIB is legendary frame builder and bike expert with over 30 years of experience, Steve Potts of Steve Potts Bicycles. Steve is one of pioneers of the titanium movement in cycling and has been at NAHBS for as long as we can remember. We’re psyched to see Steve in Louisville this March!

How long have you been building bikes/frames? How did you get your start? I have been building bikes for 35 years for a full time living. I actually started in 1967 at my Tamalpais High School machine shop fixing up old frames from our local dump so I could ride on the mountain as a kid (Mount Tamalpais).

When it comes to building, do you have any guiding principles or philosophies? My guiding principle is to build a straight-forward reliable bike, with beautiful craftsmanship (welding, machining, alignment, etc.), to fit the specific needs of the rider.

What distinguishes you from other builders in your category? One of the main things that distinguishes me from other builders is that I do all of the processes from start to finish including design, machine, weld, finish machine, align, etc. I also have an extensive background in designing bicycle components from start to finish (concept, prototyping, machining, welding to finish).

What do you love – and what do you hate – about your job? I love the process of building a bike for someone and seeing it being ridden the way it was made to do. But, along with that reality, it is a lot of work and there are a lot of challenges to get the bike to that stage. But, all things that are rewarding do take a lot of work!

When you’re not building bikes, how do you spend your time? When I am not working, which is rare, I like to spend time with my two sons. We enjoy spending time doing outdoor activities and making cool and inventive things in the shop!

What is your business’ biggest challenge? My biggest challenge as a bike builder is being organized enough to take on all of the different tasks that are necessary to not only build bikes, but actually run a business!

Onto NAHBS, what are you most looking forward to at the 2015 NAHBS? I am looking forward to NAHBS overflowing with bike enthusiasts crowding the halls to check out everyone’s bikes! I am also looking forward to all of the great cycling magazines taking tons of photos and writing stories on the NAHBS 2015 show (hope they are all there to see the excitement). I am looking forward to showing a few new bikes as well!
Editor’s Note: Yes Steve- the media will be there…and we mean A LOT of media! In addition to your bikes, have your press kits, answers, and stories ready to share!

MEDIA, MEDIA, MEDIA (and what is means for you)

The number of media attending NAHBS- journalists, editors, freelancers, and bloggers – is big, and the list is growing everyday. Media will be there to learn and write about YOU – your bikes, building processes, components, tools, and more. NAHBS is an amazing opportunity to connect with media who can share your story and brand on a regional, national, and global scale.

In addition to on-site articles and show write-ups, several magazines and media outlets will be doing pre-show coverage and promotions. They’ll be featuring one-man bands, up and comers, established builders, and everything in between.

Bicycling Magazine is on board as a 2015 Media Partner and will be sending a team of writers to NAHBS.  Zack Grice, Publisher of Bicycling stated, “we’re turning them loose with our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts, all of which have about 100,000 subscribers, just for NAHBS.”

The NAHBS Media Director is Scott Kaier of SMAK Strategies, who will be coordinating media interviews and promotional opportunities with builders and exhibitors. Scott can be reached at scott@smakstrategies.com or 802.238.7577. If you’ve already registered for NAHBS, you’ll be hearing from Scott this month…stay tuned!
