Imports to the U.S. began in 1994, and by 2012 all wheels for the North American market were being produced in Velocity’s new rim production facility in Jacksonville, Florida. Despite this state-of-the-art new facility, Velocity still […]

White Industries:

White Industries was founded in 1978 by Doug White in Petaluma, CA. Industry Nine:

Functional Decoration In 2005, Clint Spiegel founded Industry Nine Componentry (I9). What began as designing suspension parts for RockShox on contract has quickly blossomed into a 16-employee company that manufactures one of the leading hubs in the world, often compared to tried and true Chris King. Just walking around the NAHBS booths, one easily notices […]

Mars Cycles:

Out of this World Casey Sussman, builder of Mars Cycles, studied the art of fillet brazing at The Bicycle Academy, in Frome, England. He is the only American to have attended their school. Sussman builds large-tubed steel race bikes using tapered headtubes.  Tubes are mitered by hand with a hacksaw and file.   Only about 25 frames […]

Matter Cycles:

Geometry and Grins Matter Cycles come from cycling mecca Boulder, Colo. and specialize in mountain bikes. Owner Collin Schaafsma says, “I occasionally make a bike with tires narrower then 40mm but it’s pretty rare.” Clean designs and fun geometry characterize Matter’s bikes. Schaafsma says,”Matter bikes are no nonsense machines made for having fun. I’m a […]

Altruiste Bicycle Company:

Unconventional Altruiste Bicycle Company come from the far east of Canada; the village of Notre-Dame in New Brunswick to be exact. Owner/Proprietor Gabriel Lang told us, “We’ve received over 11 feet of snow since the last week of January, so we’re really looking forward to our trip to Louisville. Hopefully we’ll have a break from […]

“The Best Thing I Saw at NAHBS” – Day Two:

Cherubim, the custom builder from Japan, is a long time exhibitor at NAHBS, and in its six year tenure here, it has amassed seven awards, including “Best of Show” in Sacramento 2012 for its beautiful creation, a bike called “Humming Bird”. So why am I a bit surprised I chose a Cherubim as my favorite […]

REPETE Cycles:

Coming to America Race, win, REPETE. Not sure how this translates in Czech, but it just might be a good English tagline for this new NAHBS exhibitor from Prague. Mikolas Voverka represents the modern silver-brazed steel frame specialist, and explains that reports of steel’s death are greatly exaggerated. OK, yes, but we’ve heard that a […]

2015 NAHBS Award Winners – Saturday:

Steve Potts Cycles:

Built to Ride Due to the epic snow storm just before NAHBS this year, many bikes were delayed in transit to the show. In the case of Steve Potts, only one of his three booth bikes, a partially painted gravel grinder, had made it to the Kentucky International Convention Center (though he also has bikes […]

Ceramic Speed:

Part of the Victory One of the many booths to have weather delayed shipments this year was the CeramicSpeed booth. In this case, the delayed package contained their highly anticipated Titanium pulley wheels, arguably the highest tech pulley wheels that have ever (or perhaps will ever) exist.   Co-developed with the Danish Technological Institute over […]

Sinewave Cycles:

Charging Forward Cambridge, Mass.-based Sinewave Cycles produces USB chargers for cell phones or other electronic devices, as well as dynamo hubs that generate power through the motion of pedaling. Sinewave proprietor David Dean’s love of touring and randonneuring inspired the creation of his products that enable the self-sufficiency required by those pursuits.   Reliability is […]

Nixfrixshun:

Slippery Stuff “It’s a total ‘Walter White’ situation at home.” “Is that why you’ve got the hat?”   Josh Simonds, wearing the iconic black, brimmed bowler featured by the “Breaking Bad” character, is the developer and hand-mixer (and hand-bottler, and hand-labeler) of the artisan lubricant brand. His self-proclaimed “star of the (Nixfrixshun) show” is the […]

Samurai Cycles:

Looking at the hundreds of beautiful bikes, it’s difficult to really stand out, but then you see the Samurai. Built to showcase their custom laser engraving and titanium welding, this bike looks like it comes from a modern art museum – from the future. Jointed welds (rather than bends) give this bike an angular aesthetic […]

NAHBS Seminar Report – Campagnolo:

Campagnolo Seminar NAHBS 2015 Presented by Buddy Spafford, Tech Service and Training Rep For 2015, Campagnolo’s revered Chorus, Record and Super Record cable-actuated gruppos are modified to accommodate changing frame designs and to mimic the characteristics of the electronic EPS groups. Fat Bikes at NAHBS:

Who We’re Calling “Fat” for 2015 As it has become de rigueur for major makers to offer at least one fat bike model, the 2015 NAHBS presents diverse visions concerning the burgeoning fat standard. Several offerings reflect a maturing of fat tires into a more traditional trail machine, such as the Eriksen Ti with carbon […]

Holland Cycles:

Superb Combinations of Titanium and Carbon Holland Cycles has set out to make an impression on serious road cyclists. With a background in racing from Cody Stevenson (CyclingNews Team, Jittery Joe’s), and with Bill Holland and Charles Wells handling manufacturing and custom wheel sets, each bike is a perfect fit for its rider.   Exogrid […]

Now, your local club, team or coffee-shop run posse can experience custom, pro-level […]

“The Best Thing I Saw at NAHBS” – Day One:

Although my colleague Anna Schwinn beat me to the punch by profiling it first, I’m sticking with my nostalgic choice: the Team “Z” LeMond bike circa 1990, made by Calfee, and with Campagnolo C-Record components, including the beautifully sculpted Delta brakeset. When you look at the bike, if not for the brakes and the downtube […]

Kent Eriksen Cycles:

Stalwart Performer Anyone who has owned a Titanium bicycle will confirm the following statements: they are strong as hell, and when properly crafted they will last a lifetime. The same attributes might be said of Kent Eriksen’s eponymous bicycle company based in Steamboat Springs, Colorado (and also to Eriksen’s ability on a bicycle, from what […]

KC Bike Collective:

Killin’ It KC-Style Bikes, coffee and beer. Pick any two and you have a marriage made in heaven. OK, yeah, maybe not coffee and beer. Vincent Rodriguez of Velo+ and Maps Coffee Roasters in the Kansas City suburb of Lenexa sees the combination not as some illicit menage a trois, but as a family of […]

Selle Anatomica:

Take a Seat Selle Anatomica, of San Diego, works to improve on traditional saddle technology through the use of alternative technologies and approaches. Both their X-Series saddle (developed with their iconic comfort slot) and their NSX-Series saddle depart from traditional saddles of this type through the application of chrome tanned, rather than vegetable tanned, leather […]

Connor Wood Bicycles:

Beautiful Design, Uncompromising Functionality Six-Day track racers of the 1910s and 20s used to race on wooden rims, the same material that lined the short tracks they raced on. So is the use of wood in bicycle manufacture resigned to the same dustbin of history where American Six-Day racing now resides? Not so, says Chris […]

BikeCAD:

The Technology of Craftmanship It’s tempting to think of the handmade bike industry as a realm of intuition and instinct: one look at a rider by an experienced frame builder, and he can design the perfect bike for her, from the frame angles to the number of braze-ons desired. The reality is that the handmade […]

Funk Cycles:

Funky Paint and Pretty Welds Funk Cycles brought a substantial selection of beautifully welded Titanium framesets and bicycles to this year’s show. Front and center is owner Dave Muscianisi’s personal fully anodized cyclocross machine.  According to Dan Harvey, Funk Cycles’ resident finishing expert, it took 10 hours of processing by hand to complete the violet […]

Campagnolo:

Italian Favorite Along side the shiny new 11-Speed offerings, Campagnolo has brought back their “Best Campagnolo Build” competition. The Campagnolo booth is literally stuffed with show-stoppers, adorned with Campy components. My personal favorite is the carbon LeMond Team “Z” frame built and submitted by Calfee.  Featuring reinforcing carbon webs at the joints and appearing with […]

Throwing a Curveball:

In the home of the Louisville Slugger, baseball analogies work well. Although this title might be used to describe the March snowstorm that hit us the day before this year’s show started, it instead refers to a certain question asked of all the exhibitors profiled by the NAHBS News staff this year. The question is […]

2015 Show Ready to Launch!:

Reports of our cancellation – or delay – have been greatly exaggerated. You might have heard a thing or two about this snow event that hit Louisville yesterday. While we don’t wish to minimize the plight of the good people of Kentucky who got walloped with close to two feet of snow to the […]
